Dewatered Landscape
The dewatered landscape of the Atchafalaya is a time to go hiking and to see the swamp without the water. This is also the time when plants can start growing and help cycle nutrients in this unique system. Elevations in the Basin range from near sea level to 50 feet at Melville in St. Landry Parish. The natural levee ridges are elevated 5 to 25 feet above sea level.
