Monument to Flood Protection
This monument is a part of the old "flood wall" that protected Morgan City during the 1973 flood. (Notice the height marker on the wall.) Behind the monument to the left is the new "flood wall". (Notice how much higher the new wall is.) The elevation of the Atchafalaya River gets higher each spring. In Louisiana one goes up to the river not down. The river builds the land.
