General Job Procedure

Day 1

  1. Arrange drop cloths to protect sidewalks, plants, etc.
  2. Erect scaffolding while Supplies Captain completes setup and organization of material area.
  3. Remove screens. HINT: Be sure to apply a code number to each screen (e.g. L2 marked the screen frame second from the left of the house.) Repair the screen and then apply primer, being careful to protect the screen from paint. This is long task and usually must be started early.
  4. Windows: Remove old, loose glazing compound. Prepare the wooden surface and prime. After prime dries, replace glass and reglaze.
  5. Begin scraping house using top-to-bottom approach. Wire brush metal surfaces to be painted (find out from House Captain what metal surfaces will be painted.)
  6. Begin carpentry repairs of weather boards, windows frames and door frames, etc.
  7. After scraping and general carpentry repairs apply primer paint. Apply paint using top-to-bottom approach.
  8. Caulk holes and cracks as necessary
  9. Remove scaffolding and pick up drop cloths.
  10. Store/return materials to Supplies Captain and dispose of primer brushes.

Day 2

  1. Position drop cloths and erect scaffolding while Supplies Captain completes setup and organization of material area.
  2. Apply final coats of paint to the screen frames. HINT: Must be done early to maximize drying time prior to re-hanging.
  3. Apply paint to the house using top-to-bottom and ladders & scaffolding approaches.
  4. Apply final coats of paint to window and glazing.
  5. Re-hang screens, matching the screens to the appropriate number code location.
  6. Apply top coats of paint to metal surfaces. Apply new or paint old house in contrasting colors.
  7. Paint porch and concrete steps with porch paint.
  8. Pick up drop cloths and scaffolding.
