OVERVIEW - WHAT IS CHRISTMAS IN OCTOBER?

Christmas in October is a special two-day event bringing together volunteers and donated building supplies to renovate and repair the homes of owner occupied low income elderly, and/or handicapped in various New Orleans neighborhoods. This is a neighborhood revitalization project of the Preservation Resource Center and is a local affiliate of Christmas in April, USA, based in Washington, DC.

Christmas in October using unskilled labor volunteers from Corporations and the Community at large, coupled with skilled help from construction companies do general repairs such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, plastering, painting, etc. as well as trash removal and general cleanup to qualified homes in targeted neighborhoods.

To qualify for inclusion in the program, Christmas in October personnel together with neighborhood associations notify all homeowners in the neighborhood of its program and qualification requirements. Those homeowners, who are interested then notify Christmas in October and provide certain data which is reviewed for qualification. The Steering Committee of Christmas in October then selects the qualified homes to be included, after a site visit and close review. All cost for repairs are borne by Christmas in October. Homeowners are not expected to pay for any services provided.

On the appointed days in October, volunteers, contractors and suppliers come together to complete the agreed upon work scope.
