Since the 1930's, the documentation of historic buildings in the United States has been undertaken by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and, later, the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). These organizations have recorded almost 35,000 historic structures and sites through upwards of 50,000 measured drawings. The overwhelming majority of these buildings was recorded by hand measurement and thus represent a great expenditure in time and labor, not to mention a sizable investment of public funds.
Today, recent developments in photogrammetry allow comparable, or better, accuracy and much greater efficiency than traditional hand measurement.
This site presents the use of computer-based multi-image photogrammetry to document historic rersources by the Office of Community Preservation of the School of Architecture at Louisiana State University.
